HUDSON - Look Right Penny, a heavy, progressive rock, metal pop band based in Hudson, released a new single "What Good Am I For?" on Feb 14 to thank their fans for a year of loyalty and downloads since their debut album "Sugar Lane" released on Valentine's Day 2012.Published: February 20, 2013
The Suncoast News chatted with them about their band and new single.
Suncoast News: Can you give us a bit of history about the band?
Look Right Penny: "Everyone except for our singer, Mariel, was in a hardcore band called Chaos Arcade. Our guitarist, Cotee, wanted to move toward a different direction, musically, by trying to create something that hadn't been done before. He wanted to continue playing heavy, progressive music but this time with clean, female vocals. By pairing up with Mariel, they created Look Right Penny."
SCN: What other bands or types of music inspire you? How would you describe your music?
LRP: "We strongly feel that our new single, 'What Good Am I For?' is definitely a step toward the right direction. It's hard to describe our sound with just a few words so here's a mouthful: We are a heavy, progressive rock, metal pop band with melodic and dynamic guitar riffs, harmonies, and solos, mixed with atmospheric and ambient synth, all topped off with powerful, aggressive, yet soothing female vocals. We are inspired by many bands within the progressive genre such as Protest the Hero, Between the Buried and Me, I Am Abomination, Corelia and DreamTheater.
SCN: Can you tell us more about the song released on Valentine's Day 2013? Why solicit art from the community for the music video?
LRP: "We released our debut full-length album on Valentine's Day 2012 and it is titled 'Sugar Lane.' As an anniversary present to our fans, we released a brand new song called, 'What Good Am I For?' We've recently been inspired to take another stab at songwriting again and are very proud to say that we self-produced this song. Cotee was inspired to create a video that will feature fan art displaying our name because it would be a great way to interact with our fans and let them become a part of what we are doing. It will be available on our YouTube channel and Facebook."
SCN: Do you guys perform locally? What's the best way to reach the band if a venue wants you to come out and play?
LRP: "We perform all around the Tampa Bay area and recently have been playing all over the Southeast region of the United States. The best way to contact us is either through our Facebook page or email at lookright penny@hotmail.com."
SCN: "Where do you guys practice and record? Does anyone in the band have a full-time musical career?"
LRP: "We practice in the living room of a house where the singer, guitarist, keyboard player and drummer live. Our full-length album was recorded at Bieler Bros. Records in Pompano Beach. Our new song was recorded by Kyle Hoffer at Ponderifica Productions out of Orlando. None of us have a full-time music career but we hope that someday this band will make that possible."
SCN: "Do band members do anything together besides music? How'd you all meet?"
LRP: "Cotee and Justin, our keyboard player, are cousins. Cotee and Ghaith, our drummer, have been in bands together for almost eight years. They all met Ronnie, our bass player, through another local band many years ago. Cotee and Mariel are in a relationship and have been dating for five years. Anything we do together revolves around music unless we are just hanging out at the house playing video games together."
SCN: "Is there anything else people should know about you?"
LRP: "We just want your readers to check us out on Facebook at www.face book.com/lookrightpenny and on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/lookrightpenny?feature= watch. Check out our brand new song. If you ever get the chance to see us live, don't miss the opportunity."
