A New Port Richey police officer arrested in January on drug charges in Hernando County was fired Monday, according to the New Port Richey Police Department.

John Nohejl, who has not been on active duty since being suspended April 18, 2012, was arrested Jan. 17 on felony and misdemeanor drug charges by the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Nohejl, 35, was arrested in Spring Hill and charged with trafficking drugs, tampering with evidence, fleeing or attempting to flee law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia, and cocaine possession.

Nohejl was placed on administrative leave last April while the department conducted an internal investigation into him sleeping while on duty, neglecting to perform duties and unacceptable conduct.

A second internal investigation was launched Nov. 18, 2012 on Nohejl, who had been a master patrol officer assigned to the evening patrol shift. The issues looked into by the department included making false statements or intentionally misrepresenting facts as well as reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Nohejl was informed on Feb. 12 he was being fired due to his failure to cooperate with the Internal Affairs Investigation and for failing to notify his supervisors of his January arrest, according to police.

Nohejl remains in the Hernando County Jail on drug charges.
