James D. Steffens said Tuesday he is resigning as New Port Richey's police chief to take a job with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.Published: February 19, 2013
In a letter to New Port Richey Mayor Bob Consalvo, Steffens said he plans to further the partnership between the two agencies in his new role under Sheriff Chris Nocco.
He did not specify the position he is taking with the sheriff's office.
"I have had the rare honor to have worked alongside the selfless professional men and women who proudly represent the New Port Richey Police Department." Steffens wrote in his resignation letter.
"The ever-present 'can do/will do' attitude and dedicated work ethic of these special men and women has helped keep this city as safe as possible and has moved this agency to new levels of respect and professionalism."
Steffens will step down March 16.
"I would like to assist with the transition and selection of your next Chief of Police if possible," he wrote to the mayor.
Steffens, who was named police chief in October 2011, joined the department a few months earlier after retiring from a 20-year career with the Clearwater Police Department in 2009. He replaced Jeffrey Harrington, who also took a position with the sheriff's office.
