Multiple stupidities

Now we have the National Rifle Association's response to the Newtown massacre: more guns. The NRA is proposing putting an armed policeman in every school to shoot anyone who is a problem. One expert said that you have to fight fire with fire.

That seems like a great solution. This idea could be expanded to produce tax savings. If we replace the mega-thousand-dollar fire engines with compact pickups with a flame thrower in the back and a minimum-wage operator replacing the unionized firefighters we would save tax money. Then the new economic fire department will pull up at your blazing house to fight your fire with fire.

There is more than just one stupid idea like guns in schools.

Less violence

We must stop the violence shown on television and viewed by the criminally insane. If we do this we would save lives. It's just common sense.

There is much on television that is uplifting. Let's clean it up and make it more of a pleasure to watch. It should be educational and amusing but not violent. Why cater to the lowest common denominator of human minds?

We should have more music and comedy that caters to the normal mind and educational shows for children and the general public.

A start

"Are we there yet?" The voice from the back seat, we all recognize it. "Are we there yet?

Have we arrived at the place where we can discuss common-sense gun regulations? Have we grown up enough to be the adults? There is no right time to have the discussion, so we might as well have it now.

No one wants to confiscate all guns or melt down all bullets or any of the other Internet talking points. Perhaps we could begin by considering another ban on assault weapons or maybe we could consider closing the loopholes of gun-show or kitchen-table sales of firearms.

I know there are those who will say, "But you never can …" So instead of being silenced by negativity, could we try to find some common ground, a positive place to start?
