ACT registration deadline nears

Registration is open through Sept. 21 for the ACT college readiness exam, to be administered Oct. 27.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It measures what students have learned in school and what they need to know to be ready for first-year college courses. Students who wish to take the writing test should register for the ACT Plus Writing. The cost for the ACT test is $35. The cost for the ACT Plus Writing is $50.50. Fee waivers are available to qualified students who can't afford the registration fee. Students should apply for a fee waiver through their school counselor's office.

Students can register online at www.actstudent.org or by mail. Paper registration forms can be obtained from school counselor offices or by requesting a registration packet from ACT.

Bishop McLaughlin golf benefit slated

Reservations are now being taken for golfers interested in playing in the 2012 Blake Rahman Memorial Golf Outing. The tournament will be held Oct. 13 at Beacon Woods Golf Club, 12507 Clock Tower Parkway, Hudson.

Registration begins at noon, with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. All levels of golfers are welcome. Foursomes are $300 and single golfers are $75. All proceeds to benefit students at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School.

PELC to hold 2012 literacy conference

Online registration has begun for the Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties Inc.'s "Early Learning Conference: Literacy … A Lifetime of Learning," to be held from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at Bishop McLaughlin High School, 13651 Hays Road, Spring Hill.

The conference focuses on early childhood development, providing innovative practices from the fields of early education, child care, infant mental health, family involvement, business management, social work and more.

Registration is $25 and includes breakfast and lunch, provided by Chick-fil-A; entry in door prize giveaway; and access to an exhibitor hall. For $15 more, participants can buy 0.5 Continuing Education Units toward license recertification. Participants will register for three training sessions.
