'Summer Lunch Bus' rolling again

Gulfside Elementary School, working with the Pasco School District, will run its Summer Lunch Bus Program once again, weekdays from Monday until Aug. 10.

The program, which debuted last summer, was created to help ensure that children 18 and younger in the Gulfside Elementary area, in the Holiday area, can have access to a free lunch on weekdays during summer vacation. Volunteers prepare lunches at the school and then take them into the neighborhood to distribute them at specified sites and times.

Encore Academy offers enrichment in June

The Encore Academy will offer a variety of enrichment workshops in June at Pasco-Hernando Community College West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey. The Encore Academy is a service of PHCC that provides educational opportunities to adults 50 and older.

Classes include:

The registration fee is $18 for each three-hour workshop and $12 for each two-hour workshop, unless otherwise noted. Membership in the Encore Academy is not required. Participants must register for each session they wish to attend. Registration deadlines are two days prior to the workshop.

Communications course offered

Pasco-Hernando Community College's corporate training department will conduct a communications intelligence course from 8 a.m. until noon on two Thursdays, June 21 and 28, at the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce, 15588 Aviation Loop Drive, Brooksville; and from 8 a.m. until noon on two Tuesdays, June 19 and 26 in Room A164 at PHCC Dade City Campus, 36727 Blanton Road.

The course will include a personal assessment for each participant to learn their natural communication style in various conversational situations.

Smoking cessation workshop offered

Pasco-Hernando Community College is partnering with Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Center to provide a free, six-week program to those interested in quitting tobacco use.

The program includes hour-long, weekly meetings at noon Thursdays from June 21 through July 26, in room J-105 at the PHCC West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey.

Sponsored by the Florida Department of Health, the program uses a mix of counseling and optional nicotine replacement therapy. Participants are eligible to receive up to four weeks of free NRT products including gum, patches and lozenges.

This program is offered at no charge and is open to the public. There are no requirements for participation. To register, call (813) 929-1000, Ext. 213.

Area students make deans' lists

David Bender of Holiday made the dean's list for the spring 2012 semester at Beloit College, in Beloit, Wis. To make the list, students must take at least three letter-grade classes and earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or better.

Steven Van Valin of New Port Richey and Scott Fuller of Port Richey were named to the dean's list for the spring 2012 semester at the Florida Institute of Technology, in Melbourne. To make the list, students must complete at least 12 credits for the semester with a grade-point average of 3.4 or better.

Trinity student earns master's degree

Lori Hulse of Trinity received a Master of Business Administration degree during graduation ceremonies at Widener University in Chester, Penn.

Faculty exhibit at PHCC West

The Pasco-Hernando Community College art gallery, in the Alric Pottberg Library at PHCC West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey, is presenting its "Staff and Faculty Summer Art Show."

The exhibit features a range of artworks by faculty and staff members from each PHCC campus. The exhibit runs through Aug. 14. The gallery is open to the public and admission is free. Summer hours are from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. For details, call (727) 816-3231.

Holiday Rotary gives scholarship

On May 29, Rotary Club of Holiday presented graduating Anclote High School senior Brianna Weckel with a $500 scholarship.

Weckel was president of the Interact Club at Anclote High. Holiday Rotary has a 28-year tradition of giving a scholarship to a West Pasco high school Interact president who is a senior that year.

Hudson High alumnus receives degree

Richard Moore, a 2004 Hudson High School graduate, received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, based in Erie, Pa., during graduation ceremonies June 10 at the school's Bradenton campus.

Moore, who earned a bachelor's degree in biomedical studies at the University of South Florida, will begin his residency training in family medicine at a Jacksonville practice.
