Free Movie Friday going strong in Sims Park

The Cultural Affairs Committee for the city of New Port Richey will present its fourth installment of Free Movie Friday at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 in Sims Park with a documentary on unusual four-wheeled works of art and the people who motor them about.

Written and directed by Harold Blank, "Automorphosis" is a 2008 film that "looks into the minds and hearts of a delightful collection of eccentrics, visionaries and just plain folks who have transformed their autos into artworks," according to the movie's Web site.

After three previous events, the movie night seems to be a once-a-month hit that will be sticking around, said CAC member Lia Gallegos.

"We've been pleasantly surprised by the turnout and the comments we're getting from people," she said. "They're excited that there is something going on that's free downtown."

"Automorphosis" follows up December's "Night at the Museum" and November's "Ice Age: The Meltdown" and is recommended for viewers ages 12 and older. Gallegos said January's feature is a good representation of how the monthly event will be for moviegoers of all ages.

Free Movie Friday is a rain-or-shine event. If it rains there is room for attendees to sit and watch under the Sims Park Amphitheater overhang, Gallegos said.

CAC works in association with a program launched by the national nonprofit Coalition for Quality Children's Media, the Kids First! Film Festival.

In addition to the film, the Friends of the Library will provide water and soda and the Park and Recreation Kids Advisory Board will sell hot dogs and popcorn.

A series of independently made short film will again precede the featured presentation.
