Text to drive home with

The latest politically correct, let's-get-on-the bandwagon cause is banning motorists from texting behind the wheel.

Politicos from Washington to Tallahassee like to back causes almost no one opposes, like banning the wearing of pirate eye patches while driving. It makes the common folk feel as if Big Brother is watching out for them.

I dislike Big Brother.

Several questions come to mind when considering another piece of heavy-handed and intrusive legislation. For example: How are police going to enforce this texting ban? Will law enforcement officers peer into cars with high-powered binoculars from the side of the road? Will they be exempt from the legislation and still be able to click on their in-car computers while driving?

I wonder why some people would only fine teens who text while driving. Teens are the most agile and adept texters, able to click their keypads without looking. Shouldn't a texting ban be equal for all age groups? Is this not age discrimination?

The biggest question is what's next? Why not ban people from putting on makeup or shaving while driving? How about eating and reading while driving? Aren't they equally dangerous? Then there are the people who have those little dogs on their laps while driving. Isn't that a distraction?

Maybe we should just ban stupid people from driving and those who harangue you from the back seat. That would solve everything.

You can always do a study to prove anything you want. You can prove that drivers who have children in a vehicle are more likely to get into an accident than those who ride alone or with adults. Will some elected official on the politically correct bandwagon propose legislation to ban children from vehicles? (Wait, that's not be a bad idea.)

I fear, once again, we are sliding along on a slippery slope to dangerous big-brother intrusion into our lives. What will come next? Will we not be able to talk on mobile phones while driving or listen to the radio?

One thing is certain, legislators who want to micro-manage our lives drive me crazy.
