Man Who Cares

In response to David Chauncey's Feb. 16 column, here's one accomplishment of Sen. Barack Obama. With bipartisan support, he delivered more than $100 million in tax cuts via the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit program.

He graduated Harvard Law School, as the first African-American president of The Harvard Law Review. He became a civil rights attorney, subsequently served eight years as an Illinois senator. He sponsored expanded early childhood education. When several inmates on death row were found innocent, he drafted legislation requiring videotaping of interrogations and confessions.

Barack Obama fights for those who cannot.

Earlier, he served a church-based Chicago organization fighting to improve conditions in crime-infested neighborhoods. He cares deeply about the poor.

He is on the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, guarding our nation's schools, health care, retirement and employment. On the Foreign Relations Committee he is shaping global American policy, including Iraq.

He serves on the Veterans Affairs Committee, fighting for care for them. In 2005 and '06, he served on the Environment and Public Works Committee. Senator Obama serves his country.

A seasoned journalist knows never to write without research. Catchy phrases alone won't hold up.
No substance, you know?
