Fundraiser Planned For Rescued Puppies

PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- A fundraiser will be held tomorrow at a local bar and grill to help defray the cost of treating several dogs rescued from an alleged puppy-breeding operation in the East Lake area.

The fundraiser, which will include an auction, prize drawing, drink specials and munchies, will take place 7 - 10 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Boyle's Backyard Neighborhood Bar and Grill, 1101 Nebraska Ave.

Last week the Florida Department of Agriculture and Suncoast Animal League summoned the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to a home on Ranch Road to investigate a report of alleged animal cruelty. When deputies arrived they observed more than 120 small-breed dogs living in small wire crates inside the house, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

According to deputies, each of the enclosures contained from two to eight dogs. Most of the dogs were living in their own feces and urine, deputies said.

Some dogs were injured or otherwise in need of medical attention.

In addition, deputies reported, food within the crates contained feces, and the dogs had no opportunity for exercise outside the crates.

The Suncoast Animal League took the dogs into custody and housed them at three local shelters.

Deputies are conducting an animal-neglect investigation, after which the matter will be referred to the Pasco-Pinellas State Attorney's Office. Prosecutors will then determine if criminal charges should be filed.

Many of the dogs required emergency care, including surgery and X-rays. All the dogs needed examinations, heartworm tests and preventive care, deworming, vaccinations, and dental treatments.
Contributions are needed to help pay for the medical costs associated with the rescued puppies, an Animal League spokesman said.

Boyle's Backyard Neighborhood Bar & Grill has responded to this need by donating its location, services and supplies for this fundraiser.
