NEW PORT RICHEY - Pasco-Hernando Community College could add two bachelor's degree programs to its offerings.

The college's Board of Trustees voted this week to launch a bachelor of applied science degree and a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Both would begin in August 2014.

The plan to add the two degrees still must be reviewed and approved by the Division of Florida Colleges, the state Department of Education and the college's accrediting agency.

"This is a landmark decision for PHCC, for our students and for the communities we serve," PHCC President Katherine Johnson said in a statement.

"These high-interest bachelor's level programs meet our district's critical needs and provide residents opportunities to earn these degrees cost-effectively and close to home."

PHCC will continue to offer its traditional associate in arts degree program that guarantees graduates the opportunity to transfer to a university at the junior level. The college also offers more than 50 associate in science degrees and certificate programs.
