Off-duty officer hits bicyclist in Clearwater

An off-duty police officer crashed into a bicyclist this afternoon in Clearwater and critically injured the person, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

Thomas Farrell, 49, a police officer in Belleair, ran into the bicyclist while driving through the intersection of Drew Street and Old Coachman Road about 1:30 p.m.. Farrell, heading west on Drew Street, had a green light, but the bicyclist rode into Drew Street traffic, police said.

Authorities are still trying to identify the bicyclist, who suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
